I teach English to undergraduates in a university in Saudi Arabia. I used to be involved in the computer industry so love combining education with technology.
Moodle is a closed environment and I used it to encourage students to use English more outside the classroom. They were asked to write about themselves and the things that were important to them in their lives in the forums. I found that students responded well to the environment and it gave the shy students a voice. They also enjoyed commenting on each others posts. Apart from that Moodle was also used for homework assignments and all student homework was uploaded, graded and returned to them via Moodle.
Now I'd like to experiment with the more open environment of blogs but am not sure how I would use them as yet. I'll look around at the blogs on this site and see how others are using them before I dive in myself.
HI Paul
Maybe you can tell me more about how you have used Moodle!
As regards blogs, do have a look at my teacher blog, My Languages . I am using it to encourage professional development within our mfl faculty. I also have a student blog, although it is still in its infancy.

Have you ever used Moodle or WebCT yourself?
